Google Earth is my favorite software with a freeware license. This program is a virtual globe, I mean a model or representation of the Earth and recently include a representation of Mars, Moon and the sky.
I got this program since a lot of time… I don’t remember specifically when I got it, but is a great tool for travellers or people who works with maps because is free and very easy to use, just you have to download in official web: http://www.google.com/intl/es/earth/index.html#utm_campaign=es&utm_medium=ha&utm_source=es-ha-sk-eargen&utm_term=google%20earth

I often use Google Earth for every fieldwork or trip that I plan. Recently I download a new tool from www.andeshandbook.org, where you can add lots of mountain’s routes to the map and be prepared visualizing the trip if you want climb a mountain:
Life without Google Earth? Perfectly you can live without it, but you will must to be prepared to pay expensive maps if you need it for work… but another question about this Earth’s representation: his function to operate like an hegemonic image, and unconsciously we assume all world is known with these shapes… There are lots politics and ethics issues, because this representation is useful for ideological reproduction from capitalism, but... everybody can manage his own actions towards more conscious purposes.
