International Workers' Day


In “May Day” is celebrating the day of International Labour Movement, commemorating the 1886 Haymarket massacre in Chicago, when a  general strike fighting for the “eight-hour day” was violently put down by the police, who fired on the workers. Six people were killed and many injured. This strike took four days, and according with  police version “an unidentified person” threw a bomb at them, justifying  his reaction. Finally, in 1887 four arrested persons were illegaly sentenced to death.


In Chile, since 1931 was decreed May 1st like a national holiday and all stores and public services must to close. 

This year the celebration finished with many demonstrations and riots of people who claim for a wage rise and improvements to working conditions.
While people demanded the increase for basic wage, the work minister says that is impossible to raise the salary, because this operation “would cause more unemployment” (…)
